The end of the 1980s in Ukraine was marked by active research activities with regard to theoretical review of the national history and its “blank spots” (in particular, within the Soviet period), new historical periodization, identification of Ukraine’s history in the context of world history. Special emphasis was made on documentary collections to be published, research respecting historiographic heritage of XIX – early XX centuries, development of special historical subjects.
In the mid 1990s – early 2000s NASU Institute of History of Ukraine provided readers with a number of innovatory publications, namely: “History of Ukraine: A New Vision” manual (edited by V. Smolii; 1995-1996, updated editions – in 1997, 2000, 2002); “Ukraine: Strengthening of Independent State. 1991 - 2001” (2001); “Essays on History of Ukraine’s Diplomacy” (2001); “Political Terror and terrorism in Ukraine. XIX – XX Centuries. Historical Essays” (2002); “The 1932 – 1933 Famine in Ukraine: Causes and Consequences” (2003) etc. Of special significance were 15-volume “Ukraine through Centuries” edition (edited by V. Smolii) and 3-volume “Ancient History of Ukraine” (edited by P. Tolochko).
Especially noteworthy are archeographic research studies, which have been published in Ukraine and Russia since the end of the 1980s. They include, in particular, the edition on the national historiography heritage (the end of XIX – early XX centuries), published by M. Hrushevs’kyi Institute of Archeography and Source Studies (NASU), numerous publications of the Institute of History of Ukraine (NASU), I. Kryp’iakevych Institute of Ukrainian Studies (NASU), V. Vernads’kyi National Library of Ukraine.
In June, 1997 the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine approved the resolution on publication of multivolume “Encyclopedia of History of Ukraine” (EHU).
The Editorial Board identified criteria related to selected persons, events, facts etc. EHU is supposed to feature the most distinguished leaders in science and culture.
The Encyclopedia of History of Ukraine provides for publication of the Encyclopedic Dictionary, which is being compiled at the moment.
The EHU Dictionary is supposed to cover all historical regions of Ukraine, describe Ukrainians’ life in Russia, Poland, Rumania, the Slovak republic, the USA, Canada and other countries, as well as life of national minorities throughout Ukraine.
About 1.000 authors have been engaged into the EHU compiling activities. The bulk of the composite authors are represented by NASU scholars and researchers in the field of the humanities.
Along with the articles on Ukraine’s history, the EHU covers high quality articles on theory, practice, innovation, and research related to the latest findings in the field of world historiography and political science; offers a wealth of information on prominent public figures and the most powerful international organizations.
In parallel, the Editorial Board realize that any reference publication can hardly keep pace with rapid changes within Ukraine’s current scientific space. Thus, we hope that the EHU e-format will allow for dissemination of the given intellectual product followed by absolutely new information resource.
We are fully aware of impossibility respecting E-Encyclopedia accomplishment prior to the publication of the EHU. Nevertheless, we believe in successful development of the first full-fledged “live” E-Encyclopedia of History of Ukraine.
