On the night of May 24, a massive Russian attack caused serious damage to the building at 4 Mykhailo Hrushevsky Street in Kyiv – one of the key centers of Ukrainian humanities.
This is where leading academic institutions that study Ukraine’s history, language, literature, culture, ethnology, and civilizational experience are based.
All seven floors of the building and the institutions housed within it were damaged by the strike.
This is where academic publications, most important works on Ukrainian history, and studies on wars, state-building, the politics of memory, culture, and the Ukrainian people’s struggle for freedom are produced.It is not merely a collection of offices or walls. It is a place where Ukrainian historical memory is shaped.
A significant portion of the building’s space is occupied by libraries, book storage areas, and archives—places where scientific collections, specialized collections, long-term research materials, and unique resources on the history, culture, and spirituality of the Ukrainian people are preserved.
According to preliminary estimates, the damage amounts to approximately 200,000 euros
