Ukraine's Archival Landscape: Remote Access and Research Opportunities is a free public webinar series running every other Friday from 28 August to 20 November 2026. It opens with a keynote by Prof. Dr. Maryna Paliienko on the country's archival sector in wartime, situating the central state archives within its broader network. The six sessions that follow each spotlight one of Ukraine's central state archives: their directors introduce their institutions to an international audience, opening up what each archive holds, how those holdings are organised, and — crucially for those working from abroad — how much can be consulted without travelling to Ukraine. Speakers also address how archives operate amid the ongoing war. Each session is moderated by scholars from universities across Europe and North America, with an open Q&A and simultaneous Ukrainian–English translation.
The full-scale war has made on-site archival research in Ukraine difficult or impossible for scholars abroad, while placing the archives' own holdings under threat. This series responds directly to both realities: it opens Ukraine's central state archives to the international research community through remote access, and it lets the institutions themselves speak to how they are safeguarding irreplaceable records under wartime conditions. For students and scholars in Ukrainian and East European studies, it is a practical gateway to collections that are otherwise hard to reach; for the archives, it is a channel to an international audience and a form of visibility that supports their preservation work.
Registration: required separately for each session; the link for each webinar appears about a week in advance on the project website and in the Facebook group. Registration closes at 23:59 Kyiv the day before each webinar.
Recordings and presentations: published open-access after each webinar
